The bassoon is a woodwind instrument in the double reed family that plays music written in the bass and tenor clefs, and occasionally the treble. Appearing in its modern form in the 19th century, the bassoon figures prominently in orchestral, concert band, and chamber music literature. It is known for its distinctive tone color, wide range, variety of character, and agility.
Bassoon reeds are made from a common species of grass called Arundo Donax, or giant cane. This strong, lightweight fibrous plant has been used in a variety of applications and can grow to more than 30 feet tall! For bassoon reeds, the cane is harvested from plants at least 60 years old, with an outside diameter of about an inch.

These reed are made with cane that is gouged, shaped, and profiled by Clip & Play reeds, using the Herzberg shape. The Herzberg shape is a narrower shape which gives the reed stable intonation throughout the instrument's range. The reeds are thoroughly play tested for consistency in all aspects: intonation, response, resistance, etc. These reeds run on the slightly more resistant side of their stated strength. Finished with a hot glue turban, made with glitter and featuring different color combinations, each reed has a unique appearance. The turbans are meticulously made which makes them smooth & symmetrical.

Hand gouged, shaped, profiled, and finished reeds from Gonzalez or Medir tube cane. These reeds are made in a Christlieb shape and hand wrapped with two different colors of cotton thread and natural, locally-sourced beeswax. No two wraps are the same. The shape gives them a beautiful singing quality with a warm, full round sound and even intonation. Medium strength reeds will play right away. Medium hard reeds will need to be broken in a little, but will ultimately last a little longer. No returns or exchanges on reeds. Reeds that break in the mail must be returned within 7 days. Please call or email first for return instructions.
